Post #496: Two Workdays Before Monday

It’s occurred to me recently that America just needs to get rid of “Weekends.” They don’t seem to serve a purpose anymore. Weekends used to serve some very important purposes to the working class – rest, relaxation, and recuperation. The middle class for some reason is no longer entitled to these previously standard practices. Holidays are just for looks on the calendar, and Saturday and Sunday are now simply two workdays before Monday.

Maybe it’s because of the technological boom of the 21st century, maybe it’s just because people no longer have anything worthwhile to accomplish with their families – but I’m willing to bet the first choice is more accurate.

If you aren’t a senior member of your workplace, get used to not seeing your family on a regular basis. Only senior ranking employees are afforded this luxury these days.

Hey everyone. Right now it’s about 3:20am. I got out of work about an hour ago and since then I’ve just been relaxing and trying to unwind a bit. It was a fairly rough day, but I’ll be going to bed here shortly and hopefully tomorrow will be a tad smoother.

The weather is supposed to be absolutely beautiful for the next 7-10 days! Mid-high 70′s for the most part, not much rain or anything else is in the forecast, so I’m looking forward to a weekend of nice weather as well! Saturday, I’m supposed to be going to a BBQ with one of my friends who I’ve been hanging out with more lately. After 8 months of trying, it’s about time I got to hang out with her, lol. Anyway, that should be a great time – and then on Sunday I probably won’t have much going on. I do need to stop in for a haircut at some point.

I just finished watching the third episode of “Happy Town” on Hulu. I think it might be close to being cancelled, but we’ll see. I know it’s being put on hold for two weeks because of bad ratings, and they might bring it back in June to finish out the storyline. I hope it does well, but all good things come to and end I suppose…

All is quiet other than that. I hope everyone has a terrific weekend! I will!

It’s still hard for me to accept the fact that not everyone is from the great State of Maine. I mean, we have Lobster! A couple of weeks ago, I was hard pressed to find anyone who had heard of Chicken Salad – you know, the tuna looking stuff…only it’s chicken…? Well, I didn’t even know chicken salad was a regional sort of thing, and what did I discover? All of the stores sell it around here, and STILL no one up around here knows what it is! Ugh, what is this country coming to?

Anyway, I finished a letter to all of my store friends back home. I’ll be sending it out today, so look for it around the beginning of next week or so, assuming you still work at the store and can be there to read it on the bulletin board.

Time to get ready for work. Hasta!

Post #493: B-52 Flight to Alaska!

This past week has been absolutely amazing! I’ve done more this week than a lot of people can say they’ve done over the course of several years.

The week started out by going to a lot of training appointments. I had to learn how to parachute out of an aircraft in case our plane had any problems on the way to Alaska. I dangled from the roof of a building strapped into a parachute, then had to release myself from it and drop to the floor to simulate a real-life scenario. It was pretty neat! I stopped by and grabbed my helmet, visor, and oxygen mask for the flight, then picked up my flight suit, which consisted of new boots, the jumpsuit, gloves and the jacket.

Flight crew picture – Two hours prior to take-off

On Wednesday, we met with our Squadron Commander who was also our pilot for the flight. We just went over all of the basics – what to eat, drink, when to take pictures, all of that good stuff.

On Thursday, the crew met at 5:15am for pre-flight briefings, weather reports, airfield conditions, etc. We went out to the jet at about 7:15am, took the crew picture (above) and then loaded all of our equipment and gear on to the plane. After a minor maintenance setback, we took-off a little after 9:30am and headed for Alaska. The trip there was pretty neat, although Canada was covered with heavy clouds for most of it. We took turns in the cockpit, as you can see:

Me in the cockpit!

The feeling of being up front in the cockpit was amazing in itself. There are certain people who don’t think it’s worth the experience to have the chance to fly the B-52, let alone get on it to tour it, but it was amazing – and those who don’t get the chance at it are missing out on something incredible.

After completing our mission in Alaska, we turned around and headed back to Minot. The total duration was about 11 hours. After we got back and landed at the base, we had a crew de-brief and we left to go home around 10pm.

If I get more pictures in the near future, I’ll be sure to post them!

Some really smart person decided to throw his (or her) fist through the wall in the stairwell up on the third floor of our BRAND NEW $20 Million dorm. Not once, not twice…three times. So, because no one decided to confess to the incident, we’ve been rewarded with a 6am showtime, in our full service dress blues tomorrow (Saturday) morning, followed by a uniform inspection, room inspection, and a god knows how long dormitory cleaning session. Yeah, I can think of 142 other people who aren’t exactly thrilled about it either.

Have a great weekend!
